Christopher J. Stephens professional web site [updated through November 29, 2006]

Welcome graphic

My humble attempt to collate all my published writing, feature my resume, and hope to get a great single job somewhere. I love teaching, but four jobs each semester can get very exhausting.

My intention is to provide a forum for my writing, and full-time employment possibilities as a college english instructor.

My Hobbies: At this point, there is no time for non-stop leisure. I have been working far too long and way too hard and one drop of free time just leads to more. Instead, I am taking to the web full steam and hoping that connections I make through folks out in the world will help me land one great teaching job instead of four exhausting ones at the same time.

September 12, 2006

This is the first day of year six since 9/11. Much of the commemorative radio and TV yesterday was understandably devastating. CNN.COM ran streaming real-time video of their network coverage from that day. From @9AM-noon, Howard Stern ran his 9/11/01 program in real time, from shortly before the moment the first plane hit the tower. DATELINE NBS had an unforgettable hour last night re: United 93, and FRONTLINE ran an hour on the troubling question of faith in the light if 9/11.
Of all the pieces, Stern's broadcast was the most unforgettable. He was shocked, saddened, outraged, and he stayed on the air for a long time for the sake of his audience. Stern does not get the credit he deserves for "making it safe for us to laugh again," [which David Letterman had done several weeks after 9/11 in his classic return to his program.]

I will be starting an MFA program in January, low-residency [online], through the University of New Orleans. This will include a month [July 2007] in Madrid Spain.
I've started to teach myself guitar, resurrecting a long dormant desire to continue my music. 2007 should be a year of getting back to what I have long been delaying. I haven't been a student for 13 years, but it's never too late to learn again.
